Gone are the days when you got a bland salad with some tomatoes. Today most of the restaurants have ”real” dishes that you can enjoy. One of them is only focused on the vegetarian kitchen – Unter Freunden. Join us as we experience a super unique evening with one of Germany best known chefs, Stephan Hentschel.

Vegetarian And vegan chef Stephan Hentschel
This guy might not be as internationally famous as other celebrity chefs. However, in Germany, he is a big deal and one evening in December, he was at the restaurant with a set menu. We knew that the restaurant we were visiting was focused on a vegetarian and vegan menu but the rest was a surprise.
Stephan Hentschel is an author and the creator of the well-known Berlin’s Cookies Cream. This restaurant was the first to become a Michelin-starred vegetarian venue in Germany. This evening he was the guest chef at Unter Freunden and was serving an eight-coarse meal. It was a set menu and you could choose between the vegetarian option or a vegan one. Mini and I went for the vegetarian one.
Getting a table at Unter Freunden
If you want to secure your spot for dinner at this restaurant, make sure to make a reservation. This is a popular place and it quickly fills up. We had a reservation and since it was a special evening it took us an hour before our table was ready. By that time it was getting late and we were hungry. However, we ended up enjoying the event so much that it was definitely worth the wait.
We ended up having a great evening. We spent time plotting about the other couples that were there and we made up stories about them (not in their face of course). When the chef was speaking about his menu, we didn’t understand a word since it was in German. But we did understand the food and it was really good. A great restaurant to wind down after a day of touristing.
Stephan Hentschel’s menu was incredible
- Bread with whipped olive oil – Who knew that you could even do that?!
- Baked leek with horseradish – We both wished that there was more of that dish.
- Stew of mushrooms – With a really rich mushroom flavor.
- Artichoke with apple and caper salsa – Fresh and really tasty.
- Beetroot with pine nut gnocchi – One of our absolute favorites. You could really taste the pine nuts!
- Braised eggplant with bean ragout – This was good and we are not even big fans of eggplant.
- Parmesan dumplings with Perigord truffle – The final dish (before dessert) and it was a good end.
- Sour cream tart with peanut ice cream and Whiskey zabaione – The peanut ice cream was like eating a piece of a dream!
Keep in mind that this menu was specially designed for this evening. However, they have a really great menu that you would want to check out!
