Have you ever met a person where you feel like you are welcomed and like you have come home to family? To us, that was our feeling when we met Luis. He owns this place with his sister and they are keeping their father’s dream alive. Gueda wine make its own wine since 2010. Before that, they were growing grapes for centuries and selling them. We ended up having a great day at Gueda Wines!

Casa Do Romezal – A Brief History
Sure, the wine is Gueda wine but the estate is called Casa Do Romezal. It all started with the death of the sibling’s father. He had a dream and wanted to make a great Quinta and offer some great wine. Since he was selling his grapes to the port wine producers, he never got to see his dream be fulfilled. His son Luis and his daughter Margarida had a mission to fulfill their father’s wish. And they have made it!
In 2014 they opened the bed and breakfast and offer overnight stays for their visitors. Everything about this Quinta is well thought out and done with nature and sustainability in focus. For example, the whole floor of the terrace is built of old slabs of schist that have been taken from the farm. Before, they used schist to stabilize the grape wines so that they would withhold wind. Today, the old slabs are a lovely floor on the terrace. Amazing and so special!

Being Welcomed at Gueda Wines
As soon as we came to the Quinta, we felt right at home. Luis made us feel so welcome and we also got welcomed by one of the house cats. Kiko (the cat) was really interested in joining our wine tasting and I got some amazing cuddles from him. Luis and Kiko were amazing hosts. We got a small tour of the Quinta, got to see the rooms, and got a perfect introduction to the Gueda Wines and landscape.
They have seven different wines and one olive oil. This place is so modern and fresh. Even if it holds on to its roots and old traditions there is so much new and hip going on here. After spending some time with Luis, we were off to take a walk at parts of the vineyard. Most vineyards will take you on a guided tour with someone explaining everything to you. At Gueda Wines it’s different!
A Guided tour with an Audioguide
At Gueda Wines, we each got an audioguide. The tour took us to a small, but beautiful, part of the vineyard. With the help of the audioguide, we could take it at our own pace. Whenever Mini wanted to snap some pictures, we could pause the audio and continue when we were ready. This way it felt very innovative and fun to explore the vineyard. Sure, we really liked Luis and would have loved for him to join us. At the same time, we had a special moment by ourselves.
We met the cutest dogs during our walk. They weren’t too excited to have us there but they were still friendly and kept their distance. The audioguide was super informative and told an interesting story. Not just about the vineyard and Gueda wine. No, we also got to learn more about port wine and the history of the Douro Valley. And, after our walk, we were ready to try the Gueda wines and their olive oil.
Wine Tasting At Gueda Wine
Straight away, we were blown away by how nice Luis had prepared the wine tasting during our walk to the vineyard. Not only did we get wine – but there was also the most amazing cheese and cold cuts platter that paired perfectly with the wine. So, there are seven different types of wine that we got to try. These were both table wines and white port wine. In fact, it was the best port wine we ever tried. Usually, the port wine that we have tried is red.
As Luis was telling us about the different flavors we agreed with everything. It was incredible to hear how much passion this man has for his wine. Each bottle had a completely different flavor and they were all really good. And not to mention their olive oil. Oh, how amazing it was! We have been to several different olive oil tastings and, this was one of the better we have tried.
Great Gudea Wines at the tasting
We both loved the innovative things about this place. For example, they have the cutest bottles ever! And they are having fun and playing with their label. How fun is it that they mention the chicken on the bottle – and not give a reason why it’s there. We can tell you that there is a story behind it. There is a reason why there’s a chicken on the label. However, to learn more about the story… you need to visit the Gueda Wines yourself.
And, if you don’t have plans of going to the Douro Valley, here’s some great news! You can order your wines online and they will ship them worldwide. How awesome is that?! We really loved our visit to this magical place. We will be the first once to order some more wine from this family-owned Quinta.
