About Sweden
Sweden is a country of forests, lakes, islands and long coastlines, stretching from the southern landscapes of Skåne to the mountains and wilderness of the north. Stockholm, the capital, is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.
But Sweden is about more than nature. Fika, Midsummer, outdoor life and a strong connection to the seasons are all part of Swedish culture. What we love most is the variety. You can explore vibrant cities, wander through quiet forests, discover historic places or follow the coastline – sometimes all within the same trip.
We have travelled through many parts of Sweden and continue to discover new places, from well-known destinations to the unexpected corners that make travelling here so rewarding.
Best time to visit Sweden
The best time to visit Sweden depends very much on what you want to experience. Summer is the most popular season, with long days, mild temperatures and plenty of opportunities to explore the countryside, coastline and cities. Sweden is also a great coolcation destination, especially if you prefer fresh air, outdoor adventures and comfortable summer temperatures.
Autumn brings colourful forests and fewer visitors, while winter transforms much of the country into a snowy landscape. In northern Sweden, winter is the season for skiing, snow adventures and the chance to experience the Northern Lights.
Spring can be surprisingly beautiful, with longer days and nature coming back to life. We enjoy different parts of Sweden at different times of the year – there is no single best season for exploring the country.
What to Expect from Sweden
Sweden is an easy country to travel around, with English widely spoken and card payments accepted almost everywhere. The Swedish krona (SEK) is the local currency, and distances can be greater than they first appear, particularly when travelling north.
Trains and buses connect many towns and cities, while renting a car gives you much more freedom to explore the countryside, smaller villages and places away from the main tourist routes.
Sweden has a strong connection to nature and outdoor life. The Allemansrätten, or Right of Public Access, gives everyone the freedom to enjoy much of the countryside, including forests, lakes and mountains, as long as nature, wildlife and private property are respected. This makes it easy to combine a city break with hiking, swimming, kayaking or simply finding a quiet spot beside a lake. In summer, the long daylight hours make it tempting to stay out far longer than planned.
Swedish culture is closely connected to the seasons, and food is an important part of the experience. Fika is a familiar Swedish tradition, while local produce, seafood and seasonal dishes vary across the country. And don’t expect Sweden to be all meatballs and herring.
Swedes can seem a little reserved at first, with personal space and privacy valued, but there is usually a warmer and more relaxed side once you get talking. Add bright summer nights, colourful autumn forests and dark winter days, and you get a country that can feel surprisingly different depending on when you visit.

The mining has been finished for years and the quarry has been covered in water. The water is turquoise, and it’s allowed to swim in the old quarry.

Bargain at Sweden’s largest market
Each year in July, the market takes over Kivik and it turns into a huge spectacle. About 100 000 people visit the market. Kiviks marknad started in 1907 and it just keeps growing each year. Make sure to eat here as well. There are lots of different food trucks to choose from. Our favorite is the Langos (Hungarian bread).
