El Diablo Restaurant – Visit Timanfaya National Park
This is your only way to see a volcano cooking food. And it is a sight that you won’t wanna miss! I’m not ruling out the possibility that it is a bit more for show than the “actual real deal”. By that, I mean that I’m not sure that the food is cooked all the way over the volcanic heat – it might be done in an oven and then just heated over the volcano. With that being said, I want to add that these are just our thoughts and isn’t in any way based on facts.
But either way, this is super cool and what’s really great is that you can see the food without having to buy it in the restaurant. It is out on a display and it attracts a lot of people. You can see chicken and meat laying on a big grid and you can hear it sizzle as drops of fat fall down into the volcano. Come to think of it – this must be a really nasty thing to see if you are a vegetarian.
A panoramic view over the national park
Once inside the restaurant, you have a super nice panoramic view – something that makes this restaurant well worth your visit. There is a café and a restaurant. The café open at 09.00 but the restaurant part doesn’t open until 12.00. If you are lucky, you can get a seat next to the “geysers” that are outside and see the guides pour water into the wholes and then see the water splash back up with a dramatic sound.
Be aware that the restaurant gets super warm. Since it’s located on an volcano that still is producing heat, the restaurant has a quite high temperature inside so no need to bring a sweater. And like always in Lanzarote, there is a reason why this restaurant is so cool, both outside and inside. The reason is Cesar Manrique – he’s the one that designed it!
How is the food at El Diablo Restaurant?
This might be the most important thing – how does the food taste? They serve all kinds of food and not only the one that is made over the volcano. I ended up ordering the Heifer fillet steak (16 euros) and Mini ordered a regular Spagetti Bolognese (8 euros). The prices are ok considering how popular this place is. My food was good! I got canary potatoes and mojo sauces. The meat tasted like a grilled piece of meat – there was no “special extra taste” that it was made over an volcano.
Mini, on the other hand had some really crappy bolognese. It was literary no meat in it – just some over boiled pasta and tomato sauce. So our tip is to order something that is heated over the volcano if you want to eat here. This is their specialty and it tastes good. But at the end of the day – it is the thought of having eaten food that is cooked this way that is the whole experience!
