El Golfo and Los Hervideros – Things to do in Lanzarote

Last updated May 29, 2021

El Golfo and Los HerviderosEl Golfo and Los Hervideros are two different places and they are close to each other so you will most likely visit both of them at the same time. One is a colorful and green pool. The other one is a place where the ocean shows it’s power!

El Golfo – The green Lagoon

El Golfo is the name of the small town where the lagoon is located. Thanks to this really nice place, the whole village has become a great place for tourists. Still, the most important place to visit is the green lagoon. This place gets crowded pretty quick but if you have the time, wait for the buses to leave and then go there.

Yes, this is the place where tourist buses stop frequently. A lot of people get out to see the lagoon but they are soon of to another destination and you can enjoy the lagoon with a lot fewer people. It is just a few minutes from the parking to the lagoon but you can’t see it from the road. A magical place opens up when you get there!

El Golfo is like from a fairytale

Previously you were allowed to go to the green lagoon and the beach close to it. Now you can only visit the beach because the lagoon is closed of. Like always, to many tourists were going there and destroying this magical place. But you aren’t missing out even if you can’t swim in the green water. The thing about this place is the explosion of colors! It took our breath away when we saw it for the first time.

There is really not that much to say about this place. It is a lot better to show it with pictures! And make sure to also visit the beach when you are here. There are small caves that you can visit and admire. However, don’t start climbing the rocks here! We saw a small boy that climbed up here and the rocks were sliding underneath his feet so he couldn’t get down.

The town of El Golfo

If eating fresh fish is your thing, then El Golfo is the place to be. There are a lot of local restaurants and they all have one thing in common – the fresh fish. If you can’t decide, then just go for the “fish of the day” option. This will give you the catch from the day and you will most likely be satisfied. Other than eating fish, the small town of El Golfo, offers a nice walk in between the restaurants.

It is well worth the visit so make sure to take a stroll here and don’t leave straight after looking at the Green Lagoon. We came back to this place several times and we really enjoyed it here. And the colors also change, depending what time you are here. Our best tip to give is that you want to take your time while being here and don’t hurry to the next stop.

Los Hervideros – Where nature and design meets

This place is about a five-minute drive from El Golfo and you really need to go here! It’s amazing and powerful and somewhat scary, all in once. Los Hervideros are cliffs and caves made out of lava. This is the place to be if you want to explore the power of the ocean. There is free parking close by where you can leave your car (or motorhome) if that’s your means of traveling here.

Depending on whether it’s high tide or low tide the ocean will hit the cliffs with an incredible force. And you can be right there, exploring it up close. This, thanks to Cesar Manrique that has created several platforms where you can see the water from up close. And when you look at Los Herivderos from afar, you can’t see that parts of it are man-made. It is so well interpreted into the nature that it’s really impressive!

Free of charge to visit El Golfo and Los Hervideros

A great thing is that it is free to visit both places and you can come here whenever you want. It is open all year round all day and night! Most arranged bus tours might make a stop here so that you can get to see both places. Make sure you ask your driver if you will be passing by here because it is totally a great thing to see and to explore while on the island.

Lanzarote is a fairly small island and easy to get around.
