Scanisaurus is a dinosaur and a popular tourist attraction in Bromölla, Skåne, which attracts visitors from near and far. It is an impressive sculpture of a dinosaur that stands in central Bromölla, and it is actually Scandinavia’s largest dinosaur statue! The history of the Scanisaurus
How it all started
The dinosaur was created as a tribute to Bromölla’s rich fossil history, as the area is known for the many fossils found here. Just Scanisaurus is based on a Mosasaurus – a kind of ancient sea lizard that lived about 80 million years ago. This fascinating sculpture, created by the artist Gunnar Nylund in the 1970s, stands proudly in front of Iföverken, as a symbol of the city’s industrial history and artistic heritage.

According to the internet, the sculptures on Ifötorget in Bromölla are the world’s largest free-standing mosaic sculptures, so of course you have to go and check them out when you are in Skåne / Sweden
The sculpture consists of two prehistoric lizards made by Gunnar Nylund, who worked for Rörstrand, among other things.
A Tribute to Bromölla’s Fossil History
The prehistoric dinosaurs are two swan-necked lizards (a male and a female) that sun themselves on a rock on Ivön. They are composed of approximately 3,000 pieces of ceramics and on the bottom of the fountain flora and fauna are displayed which are also typical of the Cretaceous period and further back in time.
It’s a beautiful fountain but it won’t get your adrenaline pumping and you probably won’t dream about it at night but if it’s true that it’s the world’s largest freestanding stoneware sculpture then it’s definitely worth a visit!

For tourists, Scanisaurus is a perfect place to start their journey of discovery. There are information boards around the sculpture that tell more about the history of both the dinosaurs and the city. Many visitors like to take photos here, as the sculpture with its dramatic and unique appearance makes for great photos. The sculpture is also close to the city center, which makes it easy to continue on to cafes, restaurants, and other attractions in Bromölla.
