A hidden gem in Denmark – Restaurant Domestic in Aarhus

Last updated May 24, 2021

It is a lot about food when it comes to Aarhus. In all honesty we were spoiled rotten by VisitDenmark and we got to try some fantastic restaurants. Restaurant Domestic was one of them and man was it a great place! We ate stuffed gooseberry. Yes it is true – stuffed gooseberry and lots of other deliciousness.

Restaurant Domestic

This is a restaurant that opened in 2015 is a truly hidden gem. It is located in central Aarhus but it is hidden in a back alley so it might be hard to spot. But make sure to find it because this is truly a culinary experience. This restaurant does not yet have a star in the Michelin guide but mark my words. In a while we will have to rewrite this post because we are pretty sure that Domestic will get a star in the famous guide. And they deserve a Michelin star because the food they served was truly an adventure.

Domestics menu is composed so that you choose if you want the four course meal for 500:-DDK (2016)  or the eight course meal for 900:-DDK. To that meal you can add the same amount of vine. This makes it both a food and a vine tasting.

The interior at Domestic

This restaurant is truly a cozy and comfy place. It is rustic and it feels like a truly place to have a romantic dinner. There are different “rooms” where you can sit and eat, depending on the size of your party. I loved, truly loved the details here. Like our appetizers, one was brought out on a piece of bark. How great is that?! The same thing was when we got coffee (which by the way was served in some of the cutest cups I have ever seen). The coffee was brewed so that we could see it and it looked so cool!

The information that we got about the food was amazing and the same with the sommelier that brought us the vine. There were also a lot of different vines that we got to try and they were very different from each other. One was an unfiltered white vine and it was really good.

Lots of vine - and good vine too!

What a neat way to brew coffee! I would love to serve our friends with coffee like this.

So cute coffee cups and what a great idea to use bark as a plate.

Our Dinner at Restaurant Domestic

Be prepared for a photobomb of food because we got a lot of it. I hope I got it right when it comes to the different servings we got to eat. There was so much that it was impossible to write it all down.

We tried everything - several times!

And yes those were just the snacks. Then the food came out on plates and it was so good. It has been a while but we can still remember the taste. I can still not get over the fact that you can stuff a gooseberry!

Kohlrabi with egg yolk and lardo. Laredo is some special fat.

After the dinner it was also time for desert. Even if the portions were small, there was so much to try that I believe that we all got full. But who can say no to sweets.

I am not sure if this is the correct word but it was some sort of dehydrated plum, some cookies and something called "brunsviger".
